The existing house did not take advantage of the beautiful panoramic view of the prairies, farms, and front range mountains.  Enlarging the living room and thereby opening up the southern view also will bring in passive solar gain in the summer, and be shaded by a large overhang in the summer.  The overhang will also shade and shelter a new stone terrace to fully embrace the connection to the surrounding landscape.
